It looks productive. The worksheet is complete. The answers are correct. But here's the question that keeps coming up at our kitchen table: what did the kid actually learn?
I've watched this play out in my own house. The speed is seductive. The results are real. And the damage is invisible until the next test, when the same kid stares at a similar equation and can't remember where to start.

Why instant answers erode thinking
The issue isn't that ChatGPT is bad at math. It's quite good. The issue is that learning math requires the student to do the work of thinking through the problem. Cognitive scientists call this "desirable difficulty." When a student struggles with a problem, retrieves what they know, tries an approach, fails, and tries again, they're building durable understanding.
Robert Bjork's research at UCLA has demonstrated this repeatedly: conditions that make learning feel harder in the short term produce stronger long-term retention. An AI that removes the struggle removes the conditions for learning.
The analogy I use with my kids is physical. If someone carried you up every flight of stairs, your legs would get weaker, not stronger. It doesn't matter that you arrived at the top. You didn't do the climbing.
Five signs the AI is doing the thinking
1. Your kid can't redo the problem without the tool
This is the simplest test. Take a problem they completed with AI yesterday and hand it to them today, no devices. If they can work through it, the tool helped them learn. If they're stuck again, the tool did the work.
What to try: After any AI-assisted homework session, pick one problem and ask your kid to walk you through it from scratch. Don't grade it. Just listen to whether they can explain the reasoning.
2. They go straight to the tool before trying anything
There's a difference between "I tried this and I'm stuck" and "let me just type it in." If your kid's first instinct is to open ChatGPT before picking up a pencil, the tool has become a shortcut, not a support.
What to try: Set a "pencil first" rule. Before opening any AI tool, the kid writes down what they know about the problem and what they think the first step might be. Even a wrong attempt is more valuable than no attempt.
3. They finish homework suspiciously fast
You know your kid's pace. If a problem set that normally takes forty minutes is done in ten, something changed. That something is probably an AI tool producing the answers.
What to try: Don't accuse. Just ask them to explain one of the harder problems to you. The conversation will tell you what you need to know.
4. They can't explain their own work
"How did you get this answer?" If the response is a shrug or "I just did it," there's a gap between the output and the understanding. A kid who worked through a problem can tell you, even roughly, what they did and why.
What to try: Make explanation a regular part of homework time. Not as a test, but as a habit. "Walk me through this one" is a sentence that costs nothing and reveals everything.
5. Their confidence drops on tests
This one is delayed, which makes it harder to connect to the cause. A kid who uses AI to complete homework successfully may feel confident going into a test. Then the test happens, the tool isn't available, and the results don't match the homework. Over time, this gap erodes their confidence in their own ability.
What to try: If test scores don't match homework performance, have an honest conversation about how the homework is getting done. Frame it around support, not punishment.

Banning AI won't work long term. Your kid will find it, or their classmates will share it. The better move is to change the kind of AI your kid uses.
An answer-giving tool says: "The answer is x = 5. Here's how."

The second interaction keeps the kid thinking. They're still doing the cognitive work. The tool is a coach, not a calculator.
At home, I've found that the simplest version of this doesn't even require a tool. When my kid asks me for help, I've trained myself to answer with a question. "What do you know so far?" "What is the problem asking you to find?" "What would happen if you tried that?" It's slower. It's sometimes frustrating, for both of us. But the results compound.
